   Hermanus is the country's most reputable land-based whale-watching town, 115km east of Cape Town. The drive along the R44 coastal road is the scenic option.

   Cost: Rental car $30-60/day TIP: Stop at Betty's Bay for the African penguin colony at Stony Point — quieter and cheaper than Boulders.
2. 09:00 Hermanus whale-watching (June-November) 3 hours

   Southern Right whales calve in Walker Bay between June and November. Land-based viewing from the cliff path is free and excellent; boat-based tours go closer ($45-85 for 2 hours).

   Cost: Land-based free; boat tour ZAR 800-1,500 ($45-85) TIP: Pre-book the boat tour 1-2 days ahead. The cliff path runs 12km — even land-based viewing is genuinely close. Outside whale season (Dec-May), skip the boat tour and just walk the cliff path.
3. 13:00 Lunch — Hermanus harbour 1.5 hours

   Bientang's Cave (a literal cave restaurant on the rocks), Annie's at Burgundy Square or Char'd Grill. Walker Bay seafood is the local highlight.

   Cost: ZAR 400-1,000 TIP: Bientang's Cave needs booking — cliff-side cave seating is the prize.
4. 15:00 Drive to Knysna (Garden Route) 5 hours

   Hermanus to Knysna is about 5 hours via the N2. Drive past Mossel Bay, Wilderness National Park lookout, the Outeniqua Pass. The Outeniqua mountain range frames the road.

   Cost: Included rental + fuel TIP: Petrol stations are spaced — fill up at Mossel Bay or George before continuing. Drive in daylight; the N2 has wildlife on the road after dark.
5. 21:00 Knysna overnight Overnight

   Knysna sits on its namesake estuarine lagoon protected by the Knysna Heads. Boutique guesthouses on Thesen Islands and Leisure Isle are the upscale picks; the Knysna Quays area has mid-range.

2. 11:00 Drive Knysna → Cape Town (6h N2 return) 6 hours

   The long drive back — 6 hours via the N2 through Mossel Bay, the Cape Agulhas turnoff and into Cape Town. Plan a coffee stop at Storms River Bridge or in Mossel Bay.

   Cost: Rental + fuel ~$50 TIP: Leave by 11:00 to arrive in Cape Town with daylight. The N2 across the Hottentots Holland mountains is the scenic finale.
3. 18:00 Last Cape Town meal + airport handoff 2 hours

   If time allows, a quick V&A dinner before heading to the airport. The Test Kitchen at The Silo or Mama Africa on Long Street for one last local meal.

   Cost: ZAR 1,000-5,000 TIP: Don't cut it close — Friday evening Cape Town traffic to CPT can add 30-45 minutes.
4. 22:30 Cape Town Airport (CPT) departure 30 min + airport time

   Korean flights via Dubai, Doha or Singapore, 18-22 hours total. Return the rental car at the CPT depot before check-in.
