It's a quiet, low-priced time to visit, with hotels cheap and the major sights uncrowded. The rain usually comes in heavy bursts rather than all-day, so you can still plan morning sightseeing around the afternoon storms.

The trade-offs are heat and humidity (33°C and sticky) and the chance of a washed-out afternoon or a muddy rural road. But for travelers who value clear air, green scenery, low prices, and few crowds — and who can stay flexible — May is an underrated month.
